Reviews from visitors:
The entire gallery except for 1 room is Maori art. With few exceptions it is basic and/or boring. The 1 room with old masters is hit and miss, but there are several good pieces. Many people were engaging with this art. Very few were engaging with the Maori art.
The whole place has a PC/woke vibe. When I went there on Saturday there appeared to be a crazy person giving some sort of demonstration. He was loudly ranting a whole lot of nonsense. It was quite annoying when trying to contemplate the art.
The place is way overstaffed with a lot of guides standing around playing with their phones. Paid for by our rates no doubt.
The cafe is excellent and the building is very nice - a lot nicer than much of the art it has to be said.
One of my all time favourite places
I took my daughter and her children to see the old master's...instead we experienced the vibrancy of the Toi Tu Toi Ora...exhibition. 6 year old Aria wanted to go around twice... which we did. It was refreshing and thought provoking. Just great
One of the best art museums anywhere in the world. The most memorable exhibit for me is the gallery focused on beautiful modern design. It evokes a sense of the pinnacle of minimalism as a lover of modern architecture and design. The other exhibits were just as fantastic with pieces from a wide range of local and internationally recognized artists. The museum and special exhibits are even available for FREE for locals and foreign visitors alike during Auckland Anniversary Day. Staff are all super friendly and willing to help at every corner.
March 2021 has a very engaging exhibition of Maori art spread throughout this fascinating building. You are able to book yourself into a guided tour to get the most out of your visit.
