I have been to Eckersley's art store and frankly, the customer service was lacking and put me off. The staff were reluctant to step out from behind the counter and help. I tried to phone in an order for my husband to pick up and the sales assistant sounded put out and begrudgingly obliged. I was apologising to her even though I didn't do anything wrong. I just needed her help. It would be great if the staff were enthusiastic to help with information and ideas especially for people new to art. It's intimidating stepping inside an art store for the first few times and trying to figure out what to buy. Instead I felt like they were put out and I was interrupting them. There was one friendly lady that works weekends so 2 stars for her but that was a couple of years ago. I went again last year and got the same cold, indifferent treatment.
I've since found Musgrave Art store which isnt that far away from Eckersley's. Musgrave Art Store's customer service is 100% amazing. They keep a record of each customers purchases and they give you discounts. And their products aren't as expensive. Sure, its not as expansive as Eckersleys but they still stock all the best products from student to high end products. I would rather spend my money at a small store that genuinely puts its customers first.
The staff at Musgrave have extensive knowledge (I love Daniel Smith watercolours) and they have real swatch cards for paints so you can take your time and compare brands and colours. There's no rush. I can spend an hour choosing 5 watercolours because art supplies all look delicious when in the shop. And they are just as enthusiastic about different brands of paints and the pros and cons.
They take time to help me choose the perfect colours, brushes and paper and never rush me. They know my name. They easily package up parcels for pick up and they're nice to my husband. They're warm and friendly and even when they're busy, they will give you 100% attention if you're willing to wait a bit. They smile, they're warm and friendly and they care.
Eckersley's really needs to lift its game. I've been to Brisbane Eckersley's which is smaller and the staff were helpful, warm and friendly. The Art Shed were equally helpful in Brisbane.
I will 100% support the smaller local store than the chain store in this case. I hope my feedback helps because I have since spent $100's on art supplies and will continue to do so. I think its important that I give genuine feedback. This is my own personal experience.
A bit pricey compared to other places, buy great collection nonetheless.
A good selection of arts and crafts, clean uncluttered store with good service.
Love this store. Happy to support one of the last great art stores on the GC. Great range and fair prices.
