Salon Saigon’s casual and intimate setting is a welcome introduction to Vietnam’s art and cultural scene.
The first floor has generous and comfortable seating for guests, set amidst a collection of books. There is a stage set to the side for speakers and exhibitions. Upstairs is an open space where guests can walk around to view works. Salon has a casual and welcoming feel to it, nothing stuffy or pretentious.
Came here without reading any reviews beforehand and was very shocked by the depictions of atrocities committed by the Americans against the Vietnamese. Totally not what I was expecting having studied history written mainly by western historians. While the war crimes of the communists are well known by those who are informed of international history and current affairs, this museum presents the other side of the story that the western media will not. Those who cry foul and bias are probably just in denial because it hit too close to home. The Americans have always viewed themselves as benevolent liberators when it comes to spreading "freedom" in other war-torn regions. Bringing up other instances of war crime by non-Americans does not invalidate American war crime itself. How can anyone simply brush off pictorial evidence by third party photographers from all over the world and statistics and figures? In the end it is always the civilians who suffer the most. This is a must visit for anyone who's interested in an alternate version of history portrayed by the Vietnamese, as anti-American as it may be.
This was the place that I had my last memory of Vietnam. Prior to migrating to the US, I had the last opportunity taking the photos of my beautify friend. She was a ballet dancer in the HCM Ballet group. We were at this park right before the Tet 1982, and vendors were preparing for the Lunar New Year fair at this park.
It has been almost 38 years ago. It has been such a wonderful memory still lives in me.
