Reviews from visitors:
A phenomenal place to go for a peaceful and rejuvenating day at the art museum. Their surreal art section is my absolute favorite, you can just lose yourself. There are also rotating art exhibitions that are almost always fantastic. The atmosphere is tranquil, and there are lots of little additions to it sprinkled around the Menil itself. (Check out the Rothko Chapel!) I highly recommend this Houston gem for a day of reflection, relaxation, and enjoyment.
By far one of the greatest art collections in the Houston area you can actually visit any day of the week for absolutely free which is unbelievable and not only is there one house know there are five different buildings filled to the brim with art and history and amazing talent. The exhibits change periodically so you can go more than one time a year and check out amazing things from some of the great artists of our time. Amazing collection amazing free things to do in Houston
I was excited to return to the Menil after being away from Texas doe so long. I'm always pleased with the curators selection of works on display. I went on a weekday morning and had majority of the place to myself in silence, which absolutely wonderful. The staff was very nice as well. Don't forget to stop by their book store across the street!
As other reviewers have said, this place is a treat. A wonderful collection of art in a beautiful space. The place is amazing and free to enter with a timed admission. The biggest downer is that it is nearly impossible to enjoy and immerse yourself in the art with security over your should like you're a child that can't be trusted. I'm not sure if we looked clumsy to them or if it was just a very slow day, but we had guards over our shoulder and pacing in circles around us at every moment... whether reflecting on a bench or contemplating a piece of art. It was unnerving. Otherwise a nice way to spend the morning among world-class art and incredible exhibits.
This place was fantastic. Very cool paintings, sculptures, and artifacts here. I didn’t get to stay as long as I wanted, I hope to visit again in the future. It’s free and will not disappoint with the art on display, there are things from the First Century, 4000 BC, and other cool time periods.
