2 Grayscale Store and Gallery

Best place to go for spray paint/graffiti supplies. Super friendly and helpful staff, they make you feel very welcomed and will help with whatever you need. They have a wide range of colours and caps available, and the markers are also top quality, prefer them over Copic. Definitely a great place to go whether you're just getting started or you need to resupply.
3 Johannesburg Art Gallery

The gallery is currently showing "The Art of Comics" featuring a historic and contemporary look at the work of artists from South Africa, the broader continent, France, Reunion island and more.
There's also a wonderful Virtual Reality animation of the Rivonia Trial were Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela were sentence to life imprisonment on Robben Island.
The exhibition is on until 18 November 2019 and is definitely worth checking out (as an adult. Kids optional ☺️).
Beyond the exhibition, this is one of my favourite places in Jozi.
I used to work as an accountant not far from here and, used to come eat my lunch in the gallery courtyard.
It's a creative oasis within a neighbourhood that's emblematic of some the country's challenges.
4 AGOG Gallery

Lovely art exhibits, engaging enthusiastic curator, nice bar on the roof top. Really nice
6 Kalashnikovv Gallery

Great environment with great likeminded people. The amount of talent, knowledge and love shared in that space is magical.
It was my first time there but I felt very welcomed as if I had been there before.
If you love Art in all aspects, this is definitely a place to visit.
7 The Melrose Gallery Johannesburg

images
I pass by this place 90% of the time and the art is always eye catching and thought provoking. If you are a fan of sculptures, paintings, colour and art in general, pop into the Melrose Art Gallery and get blown away.
Always a peaceful and calm atmosphere, I almost never want to leave. Plus the managers are always accommodating to my barrage of questions which makes this a comfortable space to be in if you're intimidated by the thought of art galleries.
8 Arts On Main

Went for a couples photo shoot, parking is a bit difficult but the walk is worth the effort.
The area is being developed and you really get a sense of welcome in the area.
The art centre is clean and safe. the works presented at the time was pleasant to look at.

Refined experience. I liked the exhibitions on display during my visit.
13 Upstairs @Bamboo

images
A small and quaint art gallery at the top level of the Bamboo center. Unfortunately, the only way to be notified of upcoming exhibitions is by signing up at the actual gallery.
This venue is able to show the works of 1 or 2 artist's series but no large installations or anything as exuberant as that.
Also note that street parking is not necessary, there is on site and secure parking that is available.
The only problem is a lack of clear visibility for the gallery (although the center has clear signage).
14 Spaza Art Gallery

images
This is an eccentric, off-the-beaten track art spaza shop/shack and art house with a small tea garden attached to the owner's main house. A range of recycled objects liberally incorporated into art works, form a sculpture garden into which you wander. On the roof of one small outbuilding covered evenly with round plastic objects, it looks as if a layer of giant glistening dew drops has settled there. The plastic-clad radio tower which happens to stand in the back yard, alone is worth a visit. If you liked the Owl House in New Bethesda, this is the Jozi must-see version, complete with permanent garden sculpures by a local artist.
In order to clad the radio tower with recycled plastic up to a dizzying height, a crane was hired for a couple of days!
The Spaza Art Gallery is located in an area of Johannesburg which is currently being revamped. Owner Andrew Lindsey has converted rooms of his house into exhibition spaces, while he lives in one of the rooms. When we visited, a delicious vegetarian meal was served with tea in the small garden. Art works and craft objects on sale are reasonably priced.
Worth a visit, but check that the owner is home, his cell number is on the gate.
19 DAVID KRUT PROJECTS

Great print gallery that sells affordable works of art from the best contemporary South African artists. Printing presses are in the studio here, so if you're lucky you can watch the process. There is a great book shop attached to the studio where many art books are available, but there's a range of subject matter.
I do my best to keep this list as up-to-date as possible. I last updated it in February 2025. If you know of a street art that should be on the list, let me know. Click here to contact me. Thanks!
