Reviews from visitors:
It was the principal residence and place for entertaining visitors of Sultan Abu Bakar. The Istana is now the Sultan Abu Bakar Museum. The Istana is still being used for state ceremonies, investitures, banquets and receptions. A 53 ha garden surrounds the Istana. The Istana being a state property is guarded by the Johor Military Forces, the only private army in Malaysia. This property is a private property and intruders will be shot.
Nice place but too much tourism restriction
Saw this in March before the MCO. The Grand Palace Park is the gardens in the grounds of the Grand Palace of Johor. Several of the entrances were closed. There’s even some very serious warning signs about trespassing (see my photos). Looks nice from afar, but I wouldn't go out of the way to see this.

The people who manage the website forgot to mention that the museum is closed to public. I went there today because the website mentions that the museum is open from 9:00am until 5:00pm on Saturday. What a waste of time. Shame that such a grand museum is closed
