The Kraków Society of Friends of Fine Arts is a social group of artists, artisans and their supporters founded in Kraków in 1854, under the Austrian Partition of Poland. Today, the Society operates from the Art Nouveau Palace of Art erected by its own members in 1901 at the Szczepański Square in Kraków Old Town. After major renovations of the Palace in 1996, the Society organizes local and international art exhibits and numerous other art initiatives.
The nonprofit Society of Friends of Fine Arts was established in Kraków for the purpose of promoting Polish art and culture, against the foreign rulership of Austria-Hungary. The Society had a gallery at the Larisch'a Palace, and later in Sukiennice, exhibiting Jan Matejko among others. Four decades after its original founding, using public donations and funds acquired from the sale of Artur Grottger, on 26 June 1899 the Society began construction of its own Palace of Art along the popular Planty Park, based on design by Franciszek Mączyński.
After two years of meticulous construction, the gallery was ceremonially inaugurated on 11 May 1901 by the Mayor of Kraków, Count Edward Aleksander Raczyński. It was the first Art Nouveau building in the city, inspired by the Ancient Greek temples, with Apollo's sculpted head above its entrance, and Modernist reliefs on outside walls designed by Professor Jacek Malczewski from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.
In early 20th century, the Palace run by the Society became one of the main exhibition venues of the Young Poland movement. Today, the reborn Society composed of members of the Rotary International upholds its original mission of promoting contemporary art, both Polish and international. It organizes art auctions on site, sponsors its own Institute of Research and artwork Documentation (Instytut Badań i Dokumentacji) and publishes art catalogues about painting, graphic arts, drawing and sculpture.

6 The statue of Jan Matejko

It is a statue of the famous Polish painter Jan Matejko (1838-1893), who was born and lived in nearby Florianska Street. Jan Matejko earned his name by painting some big canvasses with historical events, particularly the 'Battle of Grunwald', and 'Union of Lublin.' His works are also on display at the Vatican museums. The sculpture of his is done by Jan Tutai in 2013. Previously there was a tomb of a soviet soldier which was transferred to the military cemetery. The area is also named after Jan Matejko including an adjacent street. It is a nice sculpture as the square indicates the large canvasses that he once painted. As it is blended with the surrounding natural settings, many a time tourists fail to notice it.

Thanks Dale for a great walking tour of the Jewish Quarter at 3.30. I love how you weaved in street art to tell the story of Krakow. You helped fill in gaps in my history knowledge and finished with great food and drink recommendations. It’s clear you love the city and sharing it with travellers. I used your recommendations and had a brilliant time in Krakow. Some walking tours can feel like a bit of a drag after hours of walking in the sun. Not this one. Highly recommend!

The most wonderful medieval church I have ever visited. The trumpet signal, which takes place every hour along with its unique and majestic architecture makes it a worth visiting place especially during the winter months. I think you travel back in history.

There was a cat so I feel compelled to award it five stars. Seeing the lavish lifestyle of that period was well done and we didn't feel like we couldn't enjoy our visit because of over bearing guards. They gave us our space and we looked about happily. I recommend it for those who like to see different lifestyles.

Quite small ground floor exhibition plus the heartbreaking Gestapo prison cells. Everything is translated into English. I appreciated the survivor testimonies although the touchscreens are a bit fidgety to change to English. Masks worn inside. Covered under the Krakow card.
