Reviews from visitors:
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is famous for more than its abundant artwork inside; it is also famous for its famed entry staircase which was featured in the Rocky movie series. This historic building is about an hour from my hometown and it is a frequent place to visit when in the city of Philadelphia. As shown in the pictures, there are many stairs and steps both inside and outside of the building, however there are ramps outside and elevators inside to allow for greater accessibility to the attractions. The museum has very wide walkways inside and outside the building (where there is a beautiful garden and view) even before the pandemic which allows for greater space to maneuver. Additionally, the last time that I went to the museum, I recall that there was an option to either download an app on your phone or to get a headset from the front desk that would audibly describe the paintings and sculptures along with read aloud the small blurbs of background information provided next to the art pieces. Overall, this is an accessible and fun location to relax and enjoy art for anyone and everyone.
Beautiful museum with many great works of art. There are many different exhibits here to keep you and particularly the kids interested. The building and the grounds are also very beautiful. There is an are upstairs where kids can make there own works of art also. The cafe has some decent choices for a quick bite, but I would suggest packing a picnic lunch to eat on the grounds are there are many nice spots to do so.
Regrettably, I am obligated to update this review and drop it from a five star to three star rating. The reason is not because of the art collection, which remains excellent. The reason for this is the poor treatment that I received from employees, who appear to have received little training and or have a hostile attitude toward museum guests.
On my last two visits, I was reprimanded for using a camera. This despite the fact that there is no rule against using a camera inside the facility. Not a professional camera, I’m talking about my camera phone. The first time was when I was in the lobby, I took some photos but I was told that I’m not allowed to take photos unless I buy a ticket. It’s like, come on now, I was getting around to buying a ticket, was that really necessary?
The second time, I was walking through the museum and using a 6 inch handle attached to my cell phone, to provide an easy grip. It is not itself a stick, it’s not a stick of any kind, just a 6 inch handle. Anyhow, some head of security dude came up to me and told me that so few sticks were not allowed in the museum. No issue with me continuing to use the phone, but also no acknowledgment that it was not a selfie stick.
When I take this in the context of the recent scandals involving management, I suppose I’m not surprised that guests are not treated as customers, but rather as inconvenient interlopers that you can push around. I’m not disobeying any posted rules, but still staff thought it necessary to get in my face.
Get your act together and get your 5 stars back. I'm rooting for you.
