The midst amazing murals I've ever seen on public buildings. The scale and attention to detail is ridiculous. Came back after 2 years and it's still in great shape. Not many tourist around and right in the rail, easy to access. A 10 minute walk from the museum of tomorrow. Def worth checking out

Im not an art buff by any means but it rained for 3/5 days we were in Rio so we needed to find something to do. The art museum was just that, very interesting to experience a different culture art form and the history behind it. Many interesting things to look and see if you cant take in the sights of the city. If you cant understand Portuguese you wont be able to immerse yourself as much.

Definitely worth visiting. Not only for the art and exhibits inside, but also the beautiful oceanside scenery as well as the architecture of the building itself. It resembles a real life starship enterprise and is deserving of a place among the top art museums.

It is a national art Museum located in the city of Rio de Jenerio, Brazil. The museum, officially established in 1937 by the initiative of education minister Gustavo Capanema, was inaugurated in 1938 by President Getúlio Vargas. The museum collection, on the other hand, takes its rise in the transfer of the Portuguese court to Brazil in the early 19th century, when King John VI brought along with him part of the Portuguese Royal Collection. This art collection stayed in Brazil after the King's return to Europe and became the core collection of the National School of Fine Arts. When the museum was created in 1937, it became the heir not only the National School collection, but also of its headquarters, a 1908 eclectic style building projected by Spanish architect Adolfo Morales de los Ríos.

We visited in April 2019 & what strikes you as you approach the steps are the amazing murals leading up to the stairs. This just adds to the colours of the stairs itself which are fairly steep. Not easy to get a photo as everyone is trying to get one especially where the Rio name & Selaron name is. It is less busy further up. It's a fairly narrow corridor but very pretty. Quite a few vendors around selling souvenirs & food as well as a couple of smaller restaurants , an icon of Rio & a must visit. Some interesting history about the artist who created the stairs & the baths he filled to create part of the stairs.
Colorful and Authentic
A beautiful colorful Brazilian experience, these steps are full of locals and tourists. I highly recommend this as a daytime excursion... you'll experience Brazil's diversity and possibly hear many languages too!

Great souvenir store. You can find a little of everything from Rio here. The best part are the cachaças! Here you can taste them before buying and they have exotic flavors like: açaí, corn, and other Brazilian fruits and nuts. Great and courteous workers too. If you're in Rio, I'm a local guide here. Really nice museum. March 2021 the only way to buy tickets is online. You come out of the tour with reflexions about the environment. I would definitely come back and recommend to visit.
I do my best to keep this list very up to date. It was last edited in October 2024. If you know of a street art that should be on the list, let me know. Click here to contact me. Thanks!
