I drive by at least 15 times a week, and I see absolutely NOTHING happening here. Sure, at the end of last summer, Dazzio closed. That same week we noticed the lot next door to Dazzio was leveled and bulldozed. Other than that, nothing has changed. I am an award winning artist with a BFA in Fine Art from Ringling College of Art and Design. I’ve applied at as many places in this city as possible. Yet, it appears to me that unless you have a lot of money, or you are politically connected, there are no opportunities in St Pete. Sadly, after graduation from RCAD in 2012, I bought a house here in south st Pete, thinking owning a property might lend some weight to my efforts, but nobody gives a s**t. With the delays in business due to COVID, I’ve been wasting my time waiting fir st Pete to evolve into the arts center it could be. Although all funding for art has been frozen, I’m beginning to see if it could be profitable for me to move to Miami, where none of their numerous arts districts have closed. With my amount of capital and mobility, along with my award winning ideas, maybe I should leave this wasteland behind. This city has an ageism problem, with attitudes that are more worthy of Paris than St Pete. Where does this attitude come from? Why is your art movement so much more important than a city like Miami? Miami has Art Basel, and the $200 billion art markets that go along with it. St Pete is lucky to hit the $500 limit!
Does anybody have real property for rent or sale in any arts district? I have cash, I can pay rent a year in advance with cash, and I have a rocking body of work. Who doesn’t want to do business with me?
Definitely a "must-stop" during St. Pete Artwalk. The artist studios are terrific and the revolving special shows are provocative.
A variety of Creative, talented artists. Big open spaces.
Roam around and enjoy the galleries. Probably best to peruse on 4th Sat. Art Walk to get overviews of what is there. If your serious about collecting some art, then use the walk to meet and connect with artists and set up appointments. Wide range of quality work and craftsmanship.
