Reviews from visitors:
A museum of local history housed since 1927 in an ecclectic style building. The structure itself is much older, from 1848. It is the work of a renowned architect of that time, Andrei Stackenschneider. It was commissioned for a local land owner of greek descent N.D. Aliferaki (Νικόλαος Αλιφιερακης in greek) who went bancrupt in 1870 and sold it to a member of the greek diaspora from the Negreponte ( Νεγρεποντη) family. One admires the four corinthian columns of the main entrance and the stucco moulding of baroc style. There are plenty of belongings of tsars Alexander I of Russia and Peter I of Russia to be seen inside and some items related to a prominent citizen of Taganrog city (Ταιγανιο), Ioannis Varvakis (Ιωάννης Βαρβακης or Ivan Andreevich Varvatsi) an officer of the Russian Navy, exporter of caviar to Europe from Astrakhan, greek benefactor and fighter at the battle of Cesme. A must visit for those that enjoy history in depth.
Palace of N. D. Alferaki, where the local history museum is located, is an architectural monument of federal significance. The building was built in 1848 by the famous St. Petersburg architect A.I. Stackenschneider for a wealthy Taganrog landowner of Greek origin Nikolai Dmitrievich Alferaki. The facade of the house is decorated with stucco and four Corinthian columns, which gives it the appearance of a palace. Later, in the 1870s, the house was bought by the merchant Negroponte and leased to the Commercial Assembly club. By the end of the 19th century. the building became fully owned by the club.
The Museum of History and Local Lore was created on the initiative of A.P. Chekhov. The museum is located in the N.D. Alferaki is an architectural monument of federal significance.
During the twentieth century, the exposition of the museum, and the building itself, underwent changes. In 1989-1996. restoration work was carried out here, which made it possible in many respects to restore the original appearance of the palace. A new exposition was opened, for the scientific development of which the museum staff was awarded the prize of the Ministry of Culture of Russia.
The exposition of the museum is presented in 13 halls of the palace, which is based on the principle of collection display with the use of museum items of fund collections: "Archeology", "Metal", "Weapons", "Ceramics", "Glass", "Fabrics", "Painting", "Sculpture", "Numismatics", etc. Today the Taganrog Museum of History and Local Lore is considered one of the oldest museums in Russia and one of the most beautiful and popular in the south of Russia.
The palace was under renovation
Before the restoration of the palace, the entire street was made in beige and gold colors (I mean the facades of the buildings in order to harmonize with the Alferaki palace), in 2019, the palace was restored, after which it was repainted in vile green color. Logically, isn't it? As for the palace itself as a museum, if you are a fan of boring lectures and stuffy rooms (at any time of the year), then you must visit it! Obviously, you can find useful and interesting information there, but this is only on condition that if you do not suffocate or fall asleep.
A very nice building. Museum under restoration
