Definitely a SCAM, actually really well organise. They refund me 50% after 1.5 hours of killing their business.
A friendly scam. As far as I can tell the batik paintings are real, just really overpriced. You can divide the price by at least 4 to get what you would pay at the actual batik art center (which is further north).
So many good works for good prices. What I love is that even have set pricelist. In malioboro a lot of so called 'art exhibitions' take place upstairs in shops in the mainstreet. They have no pricelist and ask for euros.. Dont get scammed. This place is in an alley behind the mainstreet, but so much better. The man from the shop even offered me a ride back to hotel.
Our experience here was great. A young teacher talked to us about how Batik art is made. He told us there was no pressure to buy and we were welcome to look around and take pictures (which we did). The art is done by a mix of students and masters. We ended up buying three of them. Price range was something like 15,000 rp to 1,000,000 rp depending on size and quality.
Didn't see the students, but decent works for sale. Significant discounts if you show up yourself, unreferred.
