Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta or BBY for short is one of the 3 branches from Bentara Budaya - a local cultural foundation part of Kompas Gramedia (the largest media company in Indonesia). The other two are in Jakarta and Solo.
Located in one of the busiest street uptown the place is well seen from the traffic. It is in the same location as Kompas Gramedia office.
They hold monthly exhibition as well as weekly live jazz performance every Monday night.
Unfortunately, the schedule online is not always accurate. Sometimes they have the schedule posted near the main entrance of the building but sometimes they're not. But they almost always have an exhibition every week with the opening night during the weekday.
Be sure to come in the morning before 12 or after 15 to avoid the heat on the street. The place is easy to go to by car or motorcycle but there is no bus stop nearby.
So many good works for good prices. What I love is that even have set pricelist. In malioboro a lot of so called 'art exhibitions' take place upstairs in shops in the mainstreet. They have no pricelist and ask for euros.. Dont get scammed. This place is in an alley behind the mainstreet, but so much better. The man from the shop even offered me a ride back to hotel.
A place to look for gifts in Malioboro area. It is comfortable and has a lot of various gifts. From souvenirs, snacks, batik, antiques, jewelry etc. The price is fair and the staff are well trained. Very polite and informative. Thank you!
