The murals are absolutely stunning. It's a great place for photography. Not overcrowded like most places and very clean.
2 Washington Street Art Center

Intriguing art gallery and even more so a performance space. If you’re into the weird, experimental, abrasive, and intense music culture of Massachusetts and beyond this place is for you. I cannot recommend going to a show here enough even if you’re not yet into what I said above.
3 The Guild of Boston Artists

Love this gallery. One of the only galleries in Boston with true quality control. This gallery only shows modern masters from the New England area. Whether you are an appreciator or collector of timeless and moving oil paintings, look no further. The monthly events they host are also very informative and fun with great artworld mingling. The current director, Alex, is a treat to work with. He has an extensive knowledge of all the artists shown there and of art history in general. Definitely worth a look if you're in Boston for a visit or seeking to expand your collection.

By far the most interesting, unusual, coolest art space in the city. It's an outdoor sculpture park in an active shipyard, with the most amazing views of down town, right on the water. It's like a where's waldo of artwork, so you've got to keep your eyes open! Largest collection of public art in Boston!
5 Fountain Street

I love Fountain Street Gallery! Great local contemporary art in an inviting space in the heart of Boston’s SOWA gallery district.

The exhibits here were amazing and the staff was great. The only suggestion I would make would be that the gift shop should be overhauled. There's a lot of items that had little to do with the actual exhibits with the exception to the Monet section. I thought it would be nice to have items that were replicated from the exhibits we saw. Otherwise an excellent experience well worth the price of admission

Your one-stop-shop for private or corporate art advising, framing, and installation.
10 Childs Gallery

Childs Gallery is probably the best art gallery/antique shop in ALL of New England, not just in Massachusetts. Their only competition is from their neighbor and only rival, Brodney Antiques, a few doors down on Newbury Street. However, Brodney is only quantitatively superior. Qualitatively, Childs has an unmatched inventory of high quality museum-worthy paintings, sculptures and prints in the entire New England area.
The staff is very knowledgeable and highly professional. They also do their best to be very courteous and friendly. However, one can still feel a bit of uppityness in the sociality and culture of the gallery. Then, again, when you're #1, even the subtlest attitude is to be expected. Still, in my book, they're #1 in Massachusetts and all New England. Brodney is a close second. Period.
11 Sloane Merrill Gallery

This is an excellent gallery. New exhibits are shown every month or so, and the director, Ali, has an eye for captivating pieces, but also cultivates a warm, welcoming atmosphere. I will definitely want to return again soon.

20 DTR Modern Galleries

I have purchased beautiful original art before in New York where I currently live in the tri-state. However, I have never invested in a piece of art in a gallery as I have always felt intimidated by the art gallery scene.
I was interested in a particular artist, Bisco Smith, who I discovered was sold by DTR Modern. I love everything he creates, and he is a genius. I decided to take the plunge and investigate whether or not I would be able to afford one of his pieces.
As it is a pandemic, there were many factors I needed to consider as part of my decision to invest in a piece of art at this time. Although I am fortunate as a young professional to have the means to invest in art, my biggest concern was exercising judicious responsibility. As much as I want to start collecting and building an art portfolio, doing so at a time like this could be considered irresponsible and reckless. So for me personally, this was a very big decision that I did not take lightly.
There was a specific piece I fell in love with that was within a price range that I felt comfortable purchasing despite the current economic climate. After weighing the decision to purchase heavily, I realized that this painting meant so much to me on a deeper, spiritual level and I decided to purchase it. I could not be happier and this piece of art is something I will treasure forever. I feel very fortunate to own such a beautiful piece.
While DTR Modern has an exquisite collection of artists, there are art galleries all over the world and the online art scene has exploded in recent years. I have a list of other pieces I would really like to buy, and I just as easily could have purchased a different piece from a different gallery that would bring me a similar level of joy and satisfaction as the piece I just acquired.
THE motivating factor for me to purchase this piece other than its exquisite beauty and story was because of the Gallery Director Miranda Girard.
As a former Regional Sales Director, I have experienced and worked with individuals who have a tendency to care more about a sale rather than the customer they are working with. In all of my time working in various industries, I have never experienced a level of professionalism and commitment to customer service than I have with Miranda. Not only is she an incredible artist herself, her love and passion for art truly speaks volumes above everything I have experienced.
Her approach is thoughtful, attentive, and personal. She truly cares about her clients and the value that art can have in their lives. This isn’t a job for her, it’s a passion and it is evident in how she approaches every aspect of her role. Not only did she help me find the perfect piece, she has started what I hope to be a long term relationship for art acquisition in the coming years, and I think that relationship piece is so important when making any decision to purchase a piece of art.
I am writing this review specifically to give anyone considering starting to collect peace of mind that they can do so without pressure at DTR Modern. As art is a very creative industry, having the experience and support of professionals who truly care about their artists and understand art is everything.
Although the Boston location is not in my area, I look forward to my continued relationship with DTR Modern and Miranda specifically in the coming years. I will certainly be making a special trip to the Boston gallery at the conclusion of the pandemic, and for those who currently reside in the Boston area; please do not hesitate to stop at this location where you will be undoubtedly welcomed, valued, and supported.
To say I am a happy customer would be an understatement.
I try to keep this list as up-to-date as possible. I last updated it in December 2025. Help me make this page better, for example by letting me know of a street art that should be on the list. Click here to get in touch. Thanks!
