Reviews from visitors:
Good place for age above 10 years, for kids play area is there. If you planned reached by 9:30, you can finish it before lunch. So many hotels are there opposite side of the museum. If you can bring own food places are there to eat. Restrooms are maintained very well.
Site was under renovation. However, it is well maintained. Has room for improving user experience.
Children will definitely enjoy. Nice place to spend a few hours
Established in 1851, Government Museum of Chennai is popular as the Madras Museum. Factually being the second oldest museum of India (after Kolkata’s Indian Museum), this museum is a treasure in itself! As a rich repository of finest masterpieces of art, archaeology, anthropology, numismatics and much more, the Madras Museum assures to lure one and all.
Spread across an area of 16.25 acres of land, the Government Museum is also counted among the largest museums of South Asia. Its campus has six independent buildings with 46 galleries. These are:
Main building, where you will find artifacts and sculptures from the past, animal galleries, botany galleries and philately gallery. Front building has a very interesting puppet gallery and galleries preserving the folk art and music.
This place is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm just check if it is closed for the day before you get there. This is good lush green area amidst the hard Chennai traffic area. There are about 6 different locations in the museum varying from zoology specimens , statues made of rock and stones , coins , contemporary painting and all sorts.
If you're serious historical buff then it's just the place.
Indian adults -Rs 15
Foreigners -Rs 250
Clean and quiet.... If you have time for museum visit, u should do it now... There is no crowd and it's really quite atmosphere.... Perfect :)
